Two basibranchials (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F3">3B</xref>), with anterior one rod shape, elongated, and slightly thinner posteriorly; posterior one oval. Scales cycloid and deciduous, present on body, head, and both dorsal- and anal-fin bases; all scales embedded under skin. Lateral line single, situated at upper one-fifth of body; originating above upper end of gill opening and its anterior portion slightly curved; its posterior portion indistinct. Dorsal-fin origin slightly behind vertical through upper pectoral-fin origin. Upper pectoral-fin origin at horizontal through ventral margin of eye; its length 1.5–1.7 in <abbrev xlink:title="head length" id="ABBRID0EUKAE">HL</abbrev>, its tip pointed and reaching anterior to vertical through anus. Pelvic-fin origin below preopercle; its length short, 1.9–2.4 in <abbrev xlink:title="head length" id="ABBRID0EYKAE">HL</abbrev>; its tip not reaching anterior to anus when adpressed along abdominal edge. Caudal fin slightly pointed. Last dorsal- and anal-fin rays connected to caudal fin via membrane.</p>

<p>Comments on the original description. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Neobythites">Neobythites</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nanhaiensis">nanhaiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> was recently described based on 14 specimens collected from the southern part of the South China Sea (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Chen et al. 2026</xref>). It can be distinguished from congeners by having two (rarely three) ocelli on the body and several meristic characters. However, after re-examination of the figures and data, we found several errors in the original description.</p>
<p>The figures 2B and 2D in <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Chen et al. (2026)</xref> appear to depict damaged specimens, with tails that seem to have been regenerated. This interpretation is supported by the reported unusual variation in caudal-fin ray counts (6–10), whereas congeners consistently exhibit 8 rays (e.g., <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B16">Nielsen 2002</xref>), as well as by the unusually broad ranges in dorsal- and anal-fin rays. Accordingly, we suggest that the reported counts of dorsal- and anal-fin rays, vertebrae, and associated morphometric measurements may be unreliable, and that the true range of variation in this species remains uncertain.</p>
<p>Furthermore, although <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">Chen et al. (2026)</xref> stated that the presence of two (rarely three) blotches on body can distinguish <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Neobythites">N.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="nanhaiensis">nanhaiensis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from its congeners, they restricted their detailed comparisons to only the 12 species included in their molecular phylogeny. Given that only a fraction of described species is represented in public genetic databases, it is essential to include comparisons with the remaining species based on morphology.</p>
