Structural and mechanical properties of the egg membranes of Salmo gairdneri Rich. in the period of hatching were investigated. Only local action of hatching enzyme upon the egg membrane and local decrease of its strength was observed. In the places, which were not under the action of the enzyme, egg shell keeps its structure unchanged as well as its great strength. The differences in the thickness of egg shells of the same female and even of the same egg were observed. No correlation between the thickness of the egg shell and its strength was found.

The work deals with 32 meristic features of salmon trout from the following rivers of Pomerania: Rega, Parsęta, Uniesta, Wieprza with Grabowa and Słupia. Adult individuals of salmon trout, fished out from the rivers during their spawning migration, were used as the material. The oscillation limits for values of particular meristic features were similar for males and females, as well amongst one population, as between different population of fishes . Meristic features for salmon trout were, thus, given as the result of total study, without taking into consideration sex of fishes or population to which they belonged.

The author had studied the age and rate of growth, the weight increase and the chemical compositions of eels living under the most typical conditions, such as: sea, littoral waters and inland lakes. The investigated material comprised 646 specimen of fish; out of this 499 represented the yellow eel (282 migrating from sea and river estuaries, 151 from Firth of Vistula River and 66 from inland lakes) and 96 represented the silver eels migrating to sea for spawning. 258 pieces were examined technologically and 158 were subjected to chemical analysis for content of proteins, fats, water and mineral compounds. The highest content of fat was found at the silver eels; lower content was noted at eels living in bays and still lower content, at eels living in lakes. The lowest rate of fat increase was observed at eels from inland lakes. Author concludes, that the content of fat in meat tissue is one of the characteristic conditions for silver eel, which stimulates it for spawning migrations. The existing literature in eel comprises strictly limited part of the problems such as, biological or technochemical, but does not comprise the problems in any complex form. Up to now, in Poland no detailed investigations have been carried out on the subject of eel. Aim of the present work was to determine the growth, changes in weight proportions and in chemical compositions of the eels living in Polish waters, with due consideration to the most typical conditions in economical aspect, such as: Baltic Sea-migrating and feeding (yellow eel) and silver eel. Mazurian Lakes-feeding eel (yellow). Firth of Vistula River-feeding eel. (yellow). The results of technochemical analysis permitted to define the usable and consumptive values of the fish.

[Automated translation of the Polish Summary—No original English Abstract available.] During the experiments on pike with a body length of 20 to 70 cm, the smallest focus distances for the anterior segment of the field of view, the angle of the binocular field of view in the plane of the pigmented cavities in the skin of the upper jaw symmetrically located on both sides, and the parallax obtained from the intersection of the plane of the pigmented cavities were measured in the skin of the upper jaw with a line parallel to the axis of the body passing through the end of the mouth. The distance to the closest sharp point of view was found to be proportional to the body length of pike. The linear widths of the binocular field of view at the shortest sharp vision distance do not exceed the length of the victim so that the last one fits freely within the binocular field of view at the time of attack. The parallax for the shortest sharp vision distance is approximately equal to the maximum opening of a pike's mouth.

Studies on erythrocytes fragility of bream Abramis brama (L.) originating from Zalew Szczeciński proved that maximal hemolysis takes place in solution of 0.25% NaCl and minimal in 0.55%. The curves of erythrocytes osmotic resistance are of sigmoidal profile. Visual density in any concentrations lower then 0.25% NaCl corresponds to decreasing osmotic fragility proportionally to progress of dilutions.

Body tension of bream Abramis brama (L.) in homogenous electric field of DC current in relation to direction of current flow and to fish length had been investigated under aquarium conditions. It ascertained that, threshold tension values in body depend on initial position of fish in relation to force lines of electric field and an increase of value in body tension under particular reactions is proportional to length of fish.

The present study of the effect of different hydrogen-ion concentrations (pH 5.5-8.3) on the embryonic development of the sea-trout Salmo trutta L. from the Baltic Sea has shown that incubation of eggs in buffers, irrespective of the pH of these solutions and the time when the eggs were transferred to them, is lethiferous to the embryos. The death of the embryos is preceded by the disturbance of the organogenetic process, the derangement of the physiological functions of the organism, and the inhibition of the growth rate.

Investigations were performed on changes of respiration intensity of kidney and liver of bream resulting from reversible anaesthesia. Each fish was subjected to test of 1.8 V direct current during 5 minutes remaining in homogenous electric field. Reversible anaesthesia increased the intensity of respiration of both organs. The investigations proved also the existing correlation between the weight of body and the extent of metabolic changes of liver and kidney in reversible anaesthesia. Sensitivity of fish to current test decreased in relation to increase of its weight.

The investigations of Baltic sprat have been carried out for many years, while the sprat of Bornholm Depth had never been subjected to any definite biologic analysis. Subjected to these investigations was the sprat obtained from industrial catches during 1969 and 1970. The length of body, rate of growth, age, participation of sexes, maturity of gonads and the period of spawning were investigated and determined. The stomachs of sprats were analysed for composition during the whole year.

Water uptake of eggs of Salmo trutta L. and Salmo gairdneri Rich. in water and 1/15 M buffers was studied. It was found that if buffers prevent the formation of the perivitelline space in the eggs placed in them immediately after spawning, they do not exclude its normal formation in the eggs placed for 2 or even 1 minutes in water prior to their being transferred to a buffer. The authors express their opinion that the water uptake of eggs proceeds in two stages and that there are correspondingly two factors, an osmotic and a colloidal, responsible for this process.

Spermatozoan motility was examined in Salmo trutta L., Salmo trutta m. lacustris L., Salmo gairdneri Rich. and Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitch.) from different spawning grounds and fish cultures. Fairly big differences were found in motility between spermatozoa examined under identical conditions. These differences were observed both between individual species (the spermatozoa of the lake- and sea-trout showed the highest viability and those of the rainbow trout the lowest) and between particular specimens; in this last case the differences seemed to be caused chiefly by different degrees of maturity of the gonads.

The present paper describes studies on changes in mesh sizes of the cod-end netting of trawls used by the B-18 type freezing trawlers belonging to the Deep Sea Fisheries Company (PPDiUR) "Odra" in Świnoujście. Measurements of the mesh sizes were taken from 6 cod-ends of bottom and pelagic trawlers, using a Polish Longitudinal-force mesh gauge. It was shown that a significant increase of .mesh sizes in the trawl cod-ends occurred during the trawl exploitation. Meshes of the upper part of trawls subjected to the greater deformations. Detailed results of investigations are given in Table 2 and 3.

The author determined the correlations in the growth of bream, pike perch, roach, whitefish and small whitefish - Coregonus albula coexisting in lakes. Negative correlations of growth are noted for species of various thermal requirements. The pairs of species playing a similar role in ichthyofauna assemblages of overlapping feeding niches, living in various types of lakes as well as the fish of various sizes demonstrated separate types of growth correlation. The pairs of species forming the relation of “predator-prey” demonstrated special correlations of growth.

Some biological features of the spawning stock of vimb Vimba vimba vimba (L.) reproducing in the Rega River are discussed in the present paper. The investigated material comprising 845 individuals was collected within the years 1970-1972 from the spawning ground situated near Trzebiatów. The age analysis of the stock revealed that 8 years old fishes prevailed in 1970 and 1971, while in 1972 5 years old ones were predominating. The Rega vimb growth rate is higher than that of the fishes from the other water bodies. Particularly high growth rate has been noted for the first 7 years of life. Some symptoms of the stock rejuvenation occurred within, the period investigated.

The analysis of an infestation level of the Baltic herring (Clapea harengus L.) with Anisakis simplex (Rud.) larvae as well as otoliths and gonad maturity examinations allowed to distinguish, among the Pomeranian Gulf and adjacent area herrings, 4 herring stocks appearing successively in the region investigated. The seasonal occurrence of Anisakis larvae in herring from the examined fishing regions is related to the sequence of arrival of the different stocks. Suspected sources of invasion are discussed, the Anisakis invasion being related to the North Sea herring migrations.

Survival of sperm from Salmo trutta L., Salmo gairdneri Rich., Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitch.) was investigated at constant temperatures (1.0°; 5.0°; 10.0°; 15.0°C). The longest period of survival has been found to take place at the temperature range from 1.0°- 5.0°. Further it has been stated that the duration of sperm storage at various temperatures has only a slight influence on the activity time of spermatozoa. Differences have also been revealed with regard to various fish species, fish individuals, as well as individual spermatozoa.

The influence of NaCl solutions on the hardening process of egg membranes of the trout, Salmo trutta L. was investigated. Experiments have proved that the processes connected with absorption of water and with hardening of the membranes may take place even in a habitat of a considerable salinity, but their initiation must be preceded by at least a short period of immersion of the egg in fresh water. It is the authors′ intention to try to explain the phenomenon of a different effect of solutions of various concentrations on the egg membranes as well as the increase of the membrane hardening velocity in NaCl solutions in comparison with the standard.

The combined biological and fisheries investigations carried out from the Polish research vessel "Profesor Siedlecki" on the Argentine shelf resulted, among other things, in establishing the large-size hake occurrence that had not been observed before. The fish meristic characters, presented herein, correspond with those of Merluccius polylepis Ginsburg, 1954 known from the southern coast of Chile. The distribution limit for both the Argentine hakes, M. hubbsi and M. polylepis described is set in the Atlantic Ocean between 47 and 48°S. Taxonomically, M. polylepis to the greatest extent resembles M. australis and M. paradoxus.

In the experimental way methemoglobinemia was caused to occur in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Rich., 1836 by keeping the fishes for 11 weeks in Ca(NO3)2 and KNO3 solutions, the NO3 doses in which being 26.2 mg/l and 30.6 mg/l, respectively. At the same time measurements of the hepatic tissue respiration rate, histopathologic studies of fiver as well as examination of the peripheral blood and hematopoietic organs were carried out. Marked changes which eventually could be lethal were found out.

The present study comprises an analysis of the interdependence of the fishing effort and effects of the Polish fishery on the ICNAF waters within the years 1963-1969. In the introductory chapters methods and econometric models applied are described, a particular attention being paid to the standardized measures of the fishing effort for various kinds of vessels operating on the ICNAF area. The sources of information, serving as a basis for the study are also presented. Subsequent chapters expose the seasonal character of fishery, its three forms, i.e., the seasonal character of fishing effort, fishing yields and fishing being discussed as well as their interrelationship. Results of the analysis are related to the ICNAF subdivision and the conclusion are drawn.

3 species of parasitic copepods were found on Atlantic hakes caught off the western coasts of Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean Sea (off Alexandria), and North America. The species are: Chondracanthus merluccii, Brachiella merluccii and Parabrachiella australis. The parasites importance as indicators of the affinities between hakes is discussed. Various hypotheses concerning the origin of the genus Merluccius are presented.

The reported study on the method of hydrodynamic cleaning of fish from viscera was motivated by the current need of having more universal devices than the processing machines built so far. The research was carried out with two differently constructed terminal pieces, to which water and air were supplied. The tests proved the advisability of using a water-air stream. Good results have been obtained in gutting small fish using a pressure of 3 · 105 N/m2 for the water and 5 • 105 N/m2 for air, outlet opening diameter 0.006 m.

During the period of 145 days, in 1974, an experiment with the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) culture into the net cages was carried into effect. The cages, 6 in number, were kept in warm water canal running out from the "Pomorzany II" power station in Szczecin. The water temperature in this canal evermore was above 20°C (21-32°C), and the oxygen content never fall down below 6.5 mg/litre throughout all 4 months of research. The eels were fed with minced freshwater fish at the first period of experiment, and hereafter with the mackerel flesh only. Growth of the fishes was unequal and very discriminating. Fish mortality amounts to 6.15 per cent.

Industrial wastes, the main components of which were sulphates and phosphates, induced a decrease in the intensity of staining reactions for mucopolyaaccharides (MPS) in the gills of eels. The changes in the MPS content were positively correlated with the vital changes in fishes kept in waste water with an increased sulphate content at a raised pH value.

The symptoms of pestis anguillarum in eels were determined basing on clinical and anatomopathological changes, quantitative hematologic parameters and the cytological evaluation of the peripheral blood and hemopoietic organs. The cytological diagnosis indicates the necrotic processes domination over proliferation. The symptoms are typical of an acute form of the disease and give no successful prognosis for a recovery.

In the present paper the results obtained during in vitro rearing the 3rd stage larvae of Anisakis simplex (Rud.) from Baltic herring and eggs produced by the reared females are summarised. The morphology of developmental stages obtained, i.e., the 3rd and 4th larval, adult males and females, eggs and first larval stages, is described. Different organs being formed during metamorphosis of the nematodes reared are followed.

The paper presents and analyses the catches of salmon and trout in the Szczecin Firth and lower Odra River as well as in the rivers Warta and Noteć over the period of 1952-1972. The both species had to be treated jointly because such is the case with information given by the economic statistics available to the authors. A year-to year, between-season and between-region variabilities were considered. Fish caught by the German (GDR) fishermen were also taken into account. Additionally, the post-war data concerning the lower Odra stocking with salmon and trout are collected.

A volume of trout (Salmo trutta L.) spermatozoa relative a sperm volume unit (“spermatocrit”) was studied by means of a microhematocrit centrifuge. It was found out that the method allowed density differences between sperm of various individuals to be assessed quickly and precisely; an amount of water absorbed by spermatozoa during their activation can be measured by this method as well.

The composition of fatty acids was determined in eggs of pike inhabiting some inland lakes and the Baltic′s Puck Bay. The acid percentage composition was found to vary in each lipid series. Additionally, considerable differences were revealed in quantities of the C-24 : 0; C-24 : 1, and C-24 : 2 acids present. In brackish water pike eggs, no amount of the following acids was detected: C-20 : 1, C-23 : 1, and C-23 : 2 in phospholipids, C-18 : 0 in cholesterol esters, C-16 : 4 in triglycerides. The acids listed above are present, although in very small quantities, in eggs of pike from inland waters.

The studies were aimed at checking the possibility of applying the drip to fish species′ identification from their sarcoplasmatic protein fraction determined by the starch gel electrophoresis. 5 Baltic and 24 freshwater fish species were examined. The studies proved an excellent applicability of the method to the biochemical identification of fish. The results obtained are presented on photographs and drawings.
